All men over 40 should go through the healthcare program for prostate cancer. If you have close relatives who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer it is of extra importance that you receive regular checks. The Swedish healthcare system is currently under a lot of stress and wait times for a prostate exam can be very long. SMC offers exams and PSA tests that allow you to enter the Swedish healthcare program without having to wait. All exams and tests are of the same high standard as in Sweden, and are always performed in consultation with Swedish doctors.

How the exam is conducted:

- PSA test at the time of your arrival to Riga (morning). Results are received later in the day (afternoon).

- Evaluation of PSA results by a Swedish doctor, with a referral for an MRI scan. 

- MRI during the following day. * If PSA results do not show need of an MRI of the prostate you will have the option of doing an MRI of another organ of your choosing, such as the heart or brain. 

- Results are sent to your physician, and by then you are entered into the Swedish standardised health program.

The Effects of COVID-19 

The effects of the Corona epidemic on the health care system resulted in all regions of the country being prompted to abstain from PSA testing men who do not show any clinical signs of prostate cancer. According to many doctors, such as Ola Bratt, chairman of the healthcare program and professor in urology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, due to the lack of testing the gateway into the prostate cancer healthcare system was essentially closed (from the Swedish Medical Magazine, March 19, 2020). 

March 17, 2020 a new healthcare program for prostate cancer was initiated. It provides all men over the age of 40 who do not show symptoms of prostate cancer, the option of leaving a PSA sample, followed by an MRI if the results show a slightly increased PSA value. The purpose of the healthcare program was to both diagnose prostate cancer at an early stage, and to prevent over diagnosing from conducting MRIs before biopsies. 

A New Healthcare Program

Thanks to the new healthcare program that combines PSA testing with MRI exams, the downsides of over diagnostics are limited, as mentioned in the Swedish Social Office's brochure about PSA testing.

The pros of combining PSA testing with MRI exams was the foundation for an extensive study (G2) led by Jonas Hugosson, professor at the Gothenburg University, and one of the world's most renowned surgeons in the prostate cancer field, using both open and robotic (daVinci) surgery.
